Spelling Activities To Try At Home:
1. Write words 3 times each.
2. Write words on index cards and put in ABC order.
3. Tell or write a sentence for each word.
4. Look up the words in a dictionary.
5. Sort words according to vowel sounds.
6. Play "Memory" - Match word to definition, sentence, etc.
7. Spelling Squares - Fold a paper into so that 12 squares are on the page when it unfolds. Write each word in a square and draw an illustration in the square to show what the word means.
8. Write a short story using all of the words.
9. Try some FUN ways to practice writing your spelling words - in shaving cream, with sidewalk chalk, with window-friendly crayons (great for traveling in the car!) - BE CREATIVE!
Take the CHALLENGE!
If you are getting 16 - 21 words correct on your Spelling test each week, you are ready for an extra challenge! Spelling is part of the editing process in writing. To extend your editing and correct writing skills, you can write the spelling word correctly in the sentence that is given with the word during the test. You will also be graded on the structure of your sentence and other writing skills that we have talked about and used during class that week. For instance:
* Capitalization - beginning of sentence, proper nouns, etc.
* Punctuation
* Sentence structure - Compound sentences, etc.
A few students are already doing this as part of their Spelling test. If you (your child) would like to do this, please let me know.
