Homework for Our Class

Homework will be given for three purposes: 1) to connect home with what we are learning and talking about in class, 2) for additional reinforcement of the skills that we are practicing, and 3) to help the students develop responsibility and accountability for their own independent work. A homework packet will be sent home in the student planner every Monday and is due on the following Friday. A sample daily schedule for homework and time guideline is available on our class website.

   Homework is NOT due daily but rather may be done according to what your home schedule allows during the week, making sure that homework is completed and returned by Friday. I DO encourage and request that your child reads at least 20 minutes each school night. Overall, the homework given should take about 45 minutes – 1 hour each night. This includes at least 30 minutes of reading time.

   Ideally, there will be minimal work for you to do to help your fifth grader with their homework. I want to emphasize that it’s important for your student to be responsible for finishing their homework and that includes managing their time during the week to make sure that it is completed and returned by the due date. NOTE: When a student completes a reading log, he or she may choose a reward of their choice and one of these options is a “No Homework Pass” which excludes them from a week of homework, but not the daily reading.

TIP: It’s always helpful to have a well-lit place in your home established where your child can work on his/her homework. This place can also include a hard writing surface and your child can keep it supplied with sharpened pencils and erasers, to make sure they have everything they need.

Homework Packet -  Will come home on Monday and is to be completed and returned on Friday.
Packet includes:
* Checklist - Cover page with instructions
* Fluency page and questions (to be read aloud at last twice a day/night)
* Math assignments

* Spelling - Write a complete, detailed sentence for each word or write a story using the spelling words correctly.
* Read 30 minutes each night (Monday - Friday) - Reading the "Fluency" page may be included in this time.

Please let me know if you would like enrichment activities added to your homework packet.

Daily Homework Schedule Suggestion

I have been using the weekly Homework packet, rather than assigning daily/nightly homework due to parent requests and I realize that family schedules are busy and some evenings are busier than others. With the packet, the work may be completed when your schedule works best to ensure that it is completed. Here is a daily homework schedule that is a guideline for completing the work in the packet, reading 30 minutes, practicing spelling, etc. Homework time is expected to take no longer than 1 hour per night. Again, you may adjust the schedule as needed, to meet your family's needs and to ensure that the packet is completed and turned in each Friday.

Here is a suggested outline for a standard week:

Monday:
Fluency page (read aloud 2 times)
Practice spelling words for the appropriate week
Do first page of math in the packet (worksheet or assigned page from book)
30 minutes of reading on reading level (Fluency page may be included)

Tuesday:
Fluency page (read aloud 2 times)
Practice spelling words
Do second page of math in the packet (worksheet or assigned page from book)
30 minutes of reading on reading level (Fluency page may be included)

Wednesday:
Fluency page (read aloud 2 times)
Practice spelling words (as needed)
Do the Spelling/Handwriting page

Home Connection Assignment (if applicable for the week)
30 minutes of reading on reading level (Fluency page may be included)

Thursday:
Fluency page (read aloud 2 times)
Answer questions on back of Fluency page (comprehension)
Practice spelling/writing the spelling words of the week
Finish any pages that weren't finished on the other nights

30 minutes of reading on reading level (Fluency page may be included)

*** I would also HIGHLY :) suggest to practice the times tables (multiplication facts) as much as possible during the week.*** This can be with flash cards, etc. and then with written practice as well. There are practice pages for this on our class website that may be downloaded and printed for home/personal use.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.

PLEASE NOTE: For any packets or pages that are NOT completed, the pages will be completed during recess or class time at school.

Homework Helps

Picture
I definitely don't want to have anyone feel like this (pictured to left) about homework. In my class, homework has three purposes:

1. To connect home and school with what we are learning about in class.

2. To practice and polish the skills and concepts that we are learning in class.

3. To help the students develop and strengthen their academic responsibility with having tasks to do outside of class that they need to be accountable for.

The homework that I send home is NOT meant to be homework for parents and family members as well. It will require minimal work on the parents' part, as it is ideally a review of a concept or skill that your student already knows or has recently been introduced to.

* Homework should take about 45 minutes - 1 hour each school night and that includes 30 minutes of reading.

* Homework will come home on Mondays and is due on the following Fridays. It is NOT due daily and may be finished throughout the week that accommodates your family's schedule, to have it all completed and ready to turn in on Friday.

Homework Includes:
* Homework packet
* Read 30 minutes daily (outside of school)
* Fluency page in Homework packet - Should be read at least twice a night (or morning). This may be included in the 30 minutes of daily reading at home.
* Practice Spelling words
